Thank you for sharing your project and for participating in my course! I hope you get your books published and I hope you keep in touch with children's publishing. Greetings 👨🎨
Hi @mn_h
In principle I must congratulate you because making a book is a task that takes a lot of time and dedication. So in that sense it is already a great achievement that you have finished it. As always, in each learning process there is much to improve, and you will achieve it through practice. These are some important points to improve:
- Contrast typography and backgrounds: On some pages you placed the texts on top of backgrounds with patterns, this makes reading difficult, it is important that just as the image has legibility, the same applies to the texts. For which you would have to try other composition formulas. If you need more formal information on this, I recommend that you look into the use of grid design, a book by Muller Brockman.
- Characters: I see that you are developing a personal style, and this leads to a study of the application of this style in human characters, animals or fantastic characters. Achieving that unity of style is also a great challenge. In the particular case of your book, it seems that each character has a different style. The same thing happens with the backgrounds, it seems to me that for this it is important that you first make several sketches before starting to do the illustration. To develop more composition formulas, you need the basis of drawing, the more you draw, from reality or copying from other authors, the more information you will have to achieve variety in your illustrations.
- Color palette: You have to achieve a better contrast or use of flat colors vs color gradients. Right now they compete and the same thing happens with the style of the characters. Rework with limited color palettes.
- Composition of elements: In books it is important that we use design guides and safe areas for the location of both texts and images. They are not applied here, partly because you are leaving important information in the middle of the double pages that can get lost in the fold of the pages. For this you have to develop a physical spatial awareness of reality, the experience of having a book in your hands will give you the necessary information to improve this. Review the composition lesson and composition guides.
I hope the feedback will help you, I have also seen your portfolio and for example in the case of "Pía's Journey" you have already put into practice several of the things that I have mentioned here, so keep moving forward and improving.
Thank you very much @carloshiguera for all your good advice, there I am working on it. Everything you point out in the comment helps me a lot. I will go step by step and fix the errors correcting each point. Once finished I will make an @ so you can see the result. Time and practice in that I am. Say hello to you soon. Martha.
